Low Shutter Speed at the Oulton Park Gold Cup 2009
This image was taken at the Oulton Park Gold Cup, using a low shutter speed of 1/60th of a second. Usually a shutter speed this low would result in a pretty blurred and unuseable image, but with the aid of a monopod and a healthy dose of luck, it is possible to get a reasonable level of sharpness on at least one part of the car (in this case its the rear quarter that has the best focus.)
The aim of taking this kind of image is to give a good sense of speed, and to allow the viewer to see more of the location, rather than having the frame filled with the main subject (in this case the racing car) as you would in a more traditional side on panning photograph.
When shooting shots at this shutter speed, you find yourself throwing away far more images then you keep, sometimes not because the subject is out of focus, but because the background, although blurred, isn’t very appealing. The shot shown here managed to avoid a row of parked cars and get the tree nicely in frame, which did involve a fair degree of luck.
Silverstone Classic 2009 – Part 2
David Betts – 1965 Ford Shelby Mustang GT350, Sideways at the Silverstone Classic 2009
One of the great things about the Silverstone Classic is that the cars are not just trailer queens, brought to the show for people to look at without turning a wheel. All the cars are there to race, and this means that there are always opportunities to see the cars being driven hard. In the above photo, the Mustang is part way through the last corner of the Silverstone circuit, which was taken sideways in a supreme example of classic showboating.
Vincent Gaye – 1960 Ferrari 250 SWB Berlinetta at the Silverstone Classic 2009
I’m still in love with the 250 SWB, and Vincent Gayes yellow striped 1960 Berlinetta is probably one of my favourite examples of this car.
Henry Mann / John Young – 1965 Ford Lotus Cortina at the Silverstone Classic 2009
There were plenty of Lotus Cortina’s at the Silverstone Classic, all of which were being driven hard by their owners. This particular example really caught my eye, running in different colours to the more common white/cream examples.

New Website Launch – Motorsportphotographers.com
Posted by Dave on December 2, 2009 · Leave a Comment
Over the last couple of weeks I’ve spent some time putting together a showcase website, highlighting some of the best automotive and motorsport photographers in the world. Hopefully I will find time to keep adding to the gallery site as and when I find new and exciting photographers to share with you all.
I am hoping to keep the selection to not only the best in automotive and motorsport photography, but also only include those websites that meet a ceratin high standard of presentation. While there are hundreds (if not thousands) of photographers with online portfolios, there are only a few that have a website that complements their photographic work.
If you know of any photographers who (for the most part) specialise in automotive and/or motorsport photography, please drop me a line or leave a comment and I will look at adding them to the site.
